Element Credential Configuration

Information needed for configuring element polling

Preseem's Network Poller runs in the management network, usually on the Preseem appliance or on a separate VM.  The Network Poller connects to the management IP address of APs, routers, and OLTs to extract configuration, inventory and performance data.  This data is displayed in the Preseem web app, and is used for generating benchmarks, health scores, and network topology.

In most cases, Preseem uses SNMP to collect the required data.  In some cases, some of the required data is not available via SNMP, so other methods are used.

This article explains what credentials are required for SNMP polling, and describes other credentials that may be required.  Credentials are configured in a configuration file on the Preseem Network Poller.  Once you have all the required credentials, contact Preseem Support for further instructions.

SNMP Credentials

SNMP credentials are required for any AP and OLT elements that support SNMP.

For SNMP polling, SNMP needs to be enabled on the element.  If SNMP version 1 or 2 is used, the community string must be provided.

If SNMPv3 is used, the following credentials are required:

  • username (sometimes called “security name”)

  • auth key

  • auth protocol: MD5 or SHA

  • priv key

  • priv protocol: AES or DES

Special Cases

  • Mikrotik CPE radios that are in bridge mode and are not in station-wds mode should have SNMP enabled on the CPE radio.  This allows Preseem to map devices connected to the CPE radio.
  • Mimosa CPE radios should have SNMP enabled on the CPE radio.  This allows Preseem to collect throughput metrics for each CPE radio connected to a Mimosa AP.

User Credentials

In some cases, not all required data is available via SNMP.  These cases are listed here.

  • IgniteNet APs:  A username and password to the AP is required for Preseem to map devices connected to the CPE radio.
  • LigoWave APsA username and password to the AP is recommended for complete data collection.
  • Mikrotik APs:  A read-only username and password to the AP is required for Preseem to collect RF metrics using the Mikrotik API.
  • Mimosa APs:  A password to the AP is required for Preseem to map devices connected to the CPE radio.
  • Tarana BNs:  A username and password to the AP is required for Preseem to collect data.  This device does not have any SNMP support.
  • Ubiquiti radios:  A username and password to the AP is recommended for complete data collection.  A username and password to the CPE radio is required for Preseem to map devices connected to the CPE radio.  These may be read-only credentials; see this article for more information.
